Finlets are regarded as a solution to lower the amount of drag at the rear of an aircraft. On planes with upswept tails, airflow often detaches from the fuselage before reaching the end, creating a turbulent, low-pressure wake that physically "pulls" the aircraft backward. Finlets act as small vortex generators that reduce flow separation forcing the air to remain attached to the skin longer and smoothing the trailing wake.
