Flying Vision Accelerator - Accelerating aviation's journey toward climate neutral flight in 2050

Flying Vision Accelerator (FVA) is an initiative of Delft University of Technology, Airbus, Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Royal Schiphol Group with the ambition to contribute to a decarbonised aviation sector by 2050. This ambition aligns with the broader industry objective, including the one set by IATA, ATAG, and ICAO, to reach 'net-zero carbon emissions by 2050'. To achieve this, FVA is developing a comprehensive policy and decision informing roadmap. Flying Vision Accelerator is part of Luchtvaart in Transitie. This roadmap is meant for users involved and interested in decision-informing and policy making in the global aviation system.

Roadmap

Flying Vision Accelerator (FVA) is developing a comprehensive, policy and decision informing roadmap. This roadmap is not focused on demonstrating specific technologies, but rather on outlining the transition process for the entire aviation ecosystem, including the traveller's perspective.

The project functions as a think tank and performs meta-research. It builds on existing international vision documents to identify remaining challenges, bottlenecks, and knowledge gaps that must be addressed. This is achieved through 'Deep Dive' and 'Think Tank' sessions involving a broad, open network of professionals from diverse disciplines.

The content gathering for the roadmap during Deep Dive and Think Tank sessions is structured around three core themes:

Reducing energy demand for aviation.
Implementing novel energy carriers in aviation.
The traveller in 2050, which also examines the broader mobility challenge.

The content gathered on these three themes is analysed and consolidated into one supported roadmap that defines industry-wide research and development needs. The roadmap will be updated annually.

FVA Vision

Context: a collaborative global challenge
Aviation’s growing environmental impact demands fundamental, system-wide change globally. The industry, guided by the commitments of IATA, ATAG, and ICAO, is focused on achieving 'net-zero carbon emissions by 2050’, alongside efforts to mitigate non-CO2 emissions, reduce noise, and manage waste responsibly. The Netherlands, through its commitment in Dutch policy and Luchtvaart in Transitie (LiT), is dedicated to contributing substantially to these worldwide solutions. Achieving these goals requires pooling expertise and resources across borders.

Framework

The Flying Vision Accelerator roadmap is structured around five key building blocks: Scenarios, Context factors, Milestones in time, Parameters and Measures.

The roadmapping framework uses scenarios as starting points. The scenarios sketch possible visions of the world in 2050. Backcasting is then used as a method to develop milestones. Attached to those milestones are the building blocks such as technologies and products needed to achieve the milestones. These building blocks are deduced from the Deep Dive and Think Tank sessions with experts from the sector and beyond.

Involvement Stakeholders

Flying Vision Accelerator engages a diverse range of stakeholders in shaping its roadmaps, capturing their input through various activities such as:

Think Tank sessions

Open expert-driven sessions (often half-, up to full-day sessions) designed to stimulate knowledge exchange and discussions. The insights generated during these sessions are used in the development of the roadmaps. Topics for each Think Tank session are selected through prior preparatory sessions (Deep Dive sessions).

Validation sessions

Interactive workshops where internal and external experts are invited to review and provide feedback on (specific elements) of the roadmap. Their insights help to ensure accuracy of the roadmap, and alignment with stakeholder needs.
