2-megawatt or more (2+MW) electric motors are important enablers to decarbonise the commercial "workhorse" fleet. While lower power electric motors suffice for air taxis, a 2+MW unit provides the necessary power to transition from experimental flight to regional (50-70 seat) and narrowbody aircraft. These motors serve as modular building blocks: two units can power a regional turboprop, while a distributed cluster could eventually propel a single-aisle jet.
Critically, 2+MW electric motors enable hybrid-electric architectures, allowing for smaller, optimized gas turbines assisted by electric "boosts" during takeoff. They are also an important link for hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, converting clean electricity into propulsive torque. By achieving specific power targets of 10–15 kW/kg in the 2030s through advanced cooling and superconducting materials, these motors target the regional range segment.
