Parameter overview

Market segments are defined based on travel distance. Different ranges require different aircraft and result in different travel experiences. This layer can inform operators in building new routes and business models while also informing manufacturers of potential future demand for aircraft and travel needs.
In this first version of the roadmap, we discern five market segments based on future travel range:
● Ultra-Short Range: <50 km
● Short Range: 50 - 1500 km
● Medium Range: 1500 - 4000 km
● Long Range: 4000 - 10000 km
● Ultra-Long Range: >10000 km

Aircraft are designed for specific operating ranges. This layer reflects the types and configurations of aircraft.
This layer currently includes four broad aircraft types, listed below. In future versions, additional configurations will be added and linked to the relevant layers.
● Urban Air Mobility aircraft
● Short haul aircraft
● Medium haul aircraft
● (Ultra) Long haul aircraft

Product Service Systems are a marketable set of products and services capable of jointly fulfilling a user's need. The product/service ratio in this set can vary, either in terms of function fulfilment or economic value (Goedkoop, 1999). This layer contains products and services related to fulfilling those customer/user needs in the aviation system.
During the first set of Think Tank sessions, expert participants suggested ideas (which are included as parameters in this roadmap) in three broad categories:
● Aircraft product systems
● Development supporting services
● Flight supporting service systems

The resources layer describes resources that are needed to develop the markets, aircraft, products, services, and technologies.
These resources were identified from the Think Tank sessions and were categorised under:
● Material resources
● Certification & standards
● Human resources & staffing
● Financial resources
● Fundamental & applied research
● Organisational resources
